Chapullists in London greet the Science, Industry and Technology Minister of Turkey

On 14 June 2013, the Science, Industry and Technology Minister of Turkey, Nihat Ergun, was visiting Yunus Emre Cultural Centre in London as part of his 3 day visit to the city. While he was making his speech, a group of chapulcus protested the Minister and in his person AKP government, outside the building. The protest started with the reading of the press release below and continued with slogans, placards, clanging pots and pans and songs. The group consisted of actors, artists, academics, many other professionals and students.

The Minister who had arrived at the meeting through the front door of the building had to leave it through the back door behind a police cordon.

** Press Release by Chapullist Londoners **

As London-based British and Turkish people concerned with the recent developments in Turkey, we stand in full solidarity with the peaceful protesters who are resisting the neoliberal, authoritarian policies and practices in Istanbul, Ankara and many other cities across Turkey. We would like to join Amnesty International, The European Parliament and others who defend basic human rights in condemning the disproportionate police brutality that has been inflicted on peaceful protesters.

What began on Monday, May 27, as a small occupation to peacefully protest the demolition of Taksim Gezi Park and its replacement by a shopping mall has escalated into a mass movement of resistance and struggle for democracy, human rights and freedom of speech. The government responded to the peaceful demonstrators with riot police and tear gas. During the past three weeks, hundreds of thousands of people have been attacked by tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets. The excessive police brutality has caused 4 confirmed deaths, left at least 7400 people injured. 55 people have had severe injuries. 91 people have had head trauma; 10 people have lost their eye. In the meantime, the Prime Minister Erdogan has kept delivering extremely provocative, hateful and aggressive speeches, threatening the protesters, setting people against each other and inciting violence between communities.

We strongly condemn the state violence of the Turkish Government against the demonstrators and the people of Turkey. We condemn the unacceptable silence, dishonesty and bias of the mainstream media in Turkey. The destruction of nature; increasing violence against workers, poor people, women, LGBT communities and minorities; and authoritarian interventions in the everyday lives of the people are totally unacceptable. WE FULLY SUPPORT the demands of the Gezi Park protestors in Turkey: we demand that Gezi remain a park; that continuing repression and police brutality end immediately; that the constitutional rights of those in custody be protected and their medical needs be met; that those who were taken into custody for exercising their right to peacefully and publicly protest be immediately released; that those responsible for the disproportionate use of police power and those who condoned the violence be held accountable; and that a participatory culture of democracy be established and sustained.

FINALLY, WE WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE THAT the right to live within a healthy environment and demands of fundamental liberties cannot be made subjects of a referandum by any means.
